Dayshift, and the Arts Council Collection at 80

As the Arts Council Collection marks its 80th anniversary in 2026, Dayshift, from the Exiles series, remains part of the national collection.

Dayshift, from Billy Dosanjh's Exiles series, is held in the Arts Council Collection, the UK's largest national loan collection of modern and contemporary British art. In 2026 the Collection marks its 80th anniversary.

For a picture of four Black Country men in a back garden to sit inside the national collection is a quiet kind of settling. It places a working life from Sandwell in the same record the country keeps for its art, which is close to the whole reason this archive exists: to say, plainly, that these lives belong in the national story.

The wider body of work is on view in the Paths You Walk exhibition at The New Art Gallery Walsall until 12 July 2026.
